Pulled Pork (the real thing)

Platt%27s+Pulled+Pork+2 Pulled Pork (the real thing)

We’re lucky to have a friend who smokes. They are fortunately the very same friends who throw great parties, in a killer outdoor veranda – if you can call a mini-house in the back yard with a roof but no walls and lots of antique furniture and gauzy curtains and reclaimed stained glass and teeny white lightbulbs and a built-in stereo a mere veranda – if I lived there I’d have to have a party every single night of the summer, just to get maximum use out of it. And in the winter, I’d make people wear their parkas and argue that at least their mojitos are going to stay nice and icy cold.

There were 8 large dogs (among them Lou plus a Rhodesian ridgeback in our charge – Comox the ultra-buff supermodel dog, who it turns out tries to charm people into giving up their meat – a bit of a pulled-pork whore, but I can’t say I blame her) and at least twice as many kids, who comandeered the face paints to apply themselves.

W followed Tasha around, hoping she might break into song. And we came across a posted sign, imploring the safe return of a lost Webkin.

We ate pulled pork – the real stuff, from the smoker. And Taber corn, and salads. And fruit with whipped cream and two-bite brownies. And – are you ready for this? – I didn’t bring anything. (Save for a cold bottle of Prosecco.) As we were getting ready to leave, Mike presented himself at the fridge, arms extended, ready to be loaded up. Nothing.

“Nothing? For real?”

“Nothing.”

“Why not?”

“She told me not to!”

Silence.

“Wow, this is weird. Is everything OK? You didn’t make anything?”

“I didn’t make anything.”

But I ate. A lot.

I wish I had a friend who smoked, alas I do not. That plate filled to the rim looked divine, I’m sure it tasted even better than it looks. Yummy!

We just rebuilt our deck this summer, but without a roof over our heads, we haven’t been able to get much use out of it. Maybe this fall will be nice enough to fire up the grill and use the patio heater to enjoy a few more evenings with friends before the cold sets in.

That whole post – food, veranda, kiddies, etc., is a little piece of heaven on earth!

“And in the winter, I’d make people wear their parkas and argue that at least their mojitos are going to stay nice and icy cold.” I’m laughing indefinitely.

The ultimate night off for the ultimately-deserving Julie!

We’re actually going to be around for the long weekend, so I think we’ll find ourselves at BBQ on the Bow for some pulled pork of our own. ;)

Oooh yes! Mike and I get to judge – a tough job but somebody’s gotta do it!

Speaking of Taber corn, this coming weekend is ‘Cornfest’ in Taber – lots of activities for the kids, corn tasting competition, corn eating contest, and lots of corn inspired games. The fireworks are really something amazing too!

I’m in awww of your eating experiences!!! I would love to be invited to friends homes who cook like that! I went to a Birthday BBQ that Greg’s best friend put on (for himself since his fiancee was out of town) and it consisted of pre-made hamburgers (I had to fish through the fridge for ketchup and mustard), a already made up veggie tray and pretzels. Of course there was lots of beer … it was his 26th birthday! LOL

My husband told me that if I bought a smoker he would use it and make dinner. He obviously forgot how much time it took. Two meals later – cornish game hens and a chicken – he decided to get rid of the smoker. We still laugh about it.

I was so confused at first.. who likes it when a friend smokes? ohhhhhhh… heh. Veranda envy indeed, it looks spectacular.

Every time either you or my sister-in-law mention Tasha I remind myself that I need to re-introduce myself to her. We worked together years ago in Banff and saw enough of each other after that for her to attend my wedding 15 years ago. We’ve not seen each other since, for no real reason whatsoever. It’s weird how friends can just grow apart.

No need to bring anything? It’s your turn, Julie. Enjoy and relax. Knowing you, you’ll make it up next time. I love the veranda, too. I could handle that anytime of the year.
