Nutella Latte

Nutella+Latte Nutella Latte

SHUT UP.

I KNOW!

Nutella latte.

deVille on first street.

I hate to report this, but I’m a little burnt out. Too many projects, too many deadlines, not enough bed time, and time spent in bed does not come with restful sleep these days. It’s all good stuff, of course – exciting projects, new initiatives, new boards to sit on – I’m just not doing a great job of keeping on top of it all, and I’m dropping balls all over the place. People keep saying to me, I don’t know how you do it! My secret: I don’t. My house looks like someone picked it up and shook it. On Wednesday a head cold moved in and set up camp, unpacking its cotton and phlegm into my head, nose and ears just in time for a triple-stint on the radio: I covered traffic for the Homestretch yesterday, and did a split shift with both the Eyeopener (5:30 am start) and Homestretch (6 pm finish) today. Every time I instructed listeners to report a traffic incident by dialing 403-521-1010, it came out “521-Ted Ted“. I’ve gone through enough Kleenex to buff a raw, red patch between my upper lip and nose, much like I had when I was six.

We ate Chinese food at my mom’s earlier in the week, and last night Mike made spaghetti, and tonight my sister made chicken noodle soup and grilled cheese sandwiches. Both soup and (more importantly) Shiraz were upended on my lap courtesy of one four year old. It’s a good thing he’s cute.

Would it be tacky to incorporate regifting into Free Stuff Fridays? Because Mike went to great lengths to find Julie Powell’s new book Cleaving for me, it was the only copy the bookstore had, even, and it would be a shame to read it once and shelve it. Perhaps it just seems like a good idea because I’ve been up since 4:30 am?

Cleaving Nutella Latte

Warning: her new book is not the same flavour as Julie & Julia, as you may have heard. There’s plenty of butchery, but also other nasty bits. I’ll just leave it at that. But if you’d still like a copy, you know the drill: just let us all know what was for dinner last night. I’ll draw a number on Tuesday.

A Nutella Latte sounds delicious, the head cold+busy schedule sounds like torture. Two words: Molly Maid – a few bucks and a couple hours and those ladies will get things into shape. We used to have them in once every two weeks when we were both working. It made family time less stressful – I wasn’t torn between scouring tubs and playing with the kids.

Dinner tonight – bbq chicken pizza from Benjamin’s, homemade Caesar salad, and brownies.

I am not a big fan of nutella, but that pecan sticky bun looks absolutely divine. Dinner last night was tuna melts. And not just any tuna-line caught, hand packed, unprocessed tuna purchased straight from the fisherman. Mmmmmmmmmm.

  3. Denise on 20 Mar 2010 at 6:10 am #

The pecan bun and nutella latte look great! Sorry to hear about your cold, hope you’re feeling better soon. My Friday night dinners–for the past couple of months, after a week of working and planning dinner, we have been going out for Chinese food on Friday nights.

  4. piccola on 20 Mar 2010 at 6:18 am #

I’m in the same boat as you, Julie – both on the ball-dropping and the headcold. But you’re doing much better on the food. My dinner last night was leftover veggies eaten straight from the Tupperware and a slice of cold veggie pizza, followed by yogurt for dessert. I haven’t cooked in more than a week.

  5. ladyloo on 20 Mar 2010 at 6:27 am #

Head cold central over here as well.

Dinner last night was baked tilapia and sauteed summer squash. Dinner ended up being all the same color, which I try to avoid. Oops.

  6. Brenda H on 20 Mar 2010 at 6:36 am #

Sorry to hear you are sick. Use good old fashion cloth hankies and you’ll never get a sore nose.

Dinner last night was meatloaf (made with milk soaked bread), buttermilk mashed spuds and peas. No dessert – just a 2nd glass of wine.

  7. Manon from Ontario on 20 Mar 2010 at 7:26 am #

Julie, you do too much girl, now you get to rest :)

I’m not posting this in order to get the book, but I want to share with you my very special day yesterday, once in a lifetime!

Regional Contact, with Kathie Donovan, came over at our sugar shack and kiosk, AMAZING!!! She heard about us and decided to make a story about all we do. They will be coming back for the apple tree bloom, and then they will air the segment.

Anyways, not sure if you this program gets aired in Calgary but I’ll let you know when it airs.

    Love your blog :)

  8. jenny on 20 Mar 2010 at 8:02 am #

i’m not entering the contest with this comment, but i just thought it was ironic that i just started reading it myself last night! and yes, it does have some nasty bits. =) good luck to your contestants!

  9. Lindsey on 20 Mar 2010 at 8:35 am #

I heard you on the Homestretch and I didn’t notice that you had a cold. Hope things start slowing down for you so you can feel like a healthy member of society again! For dinner we ate an asparagus and mushroom soba noodle salad. It was really good.

  10. Kate on 20 Mar 2010 at 8:35 am #

Read you for the first time today. Referred by a foodie/chef friend who worships you. LOVE the sound of a nutella latte, did I miss it, or is the actual recipe here somewhere? Or is it just nutella in a latte (which sounds divine!)…
Anyhoo, have to enter your contest because we had the BEST thing for dinner last night, Spaghetti Pie. Inspired by the movie the Waitress with Keri Russell, and used a recipe from Recipezaar (for the outline of what would be in it).
The family raved! For someone who is TRYING to get into cooking so I like it instead of hating it that is amazing. Looking forward to reading more of your blog to get inspired. LOVE that you are so real and honest.

  11. Kate on 20 Mar 2010 at 8:36 am #

oops, just noticed that you indicate WHERE to get a nutella latte, may be driving there momentarily!

  12. Elaine on 20 Mar 2010 at 8:38 am #

Nasty bits? Butchery? Intriguing. Last night we had slow-cooked salmon, truffled asparagus, salad and orzo w/ ham & caramelized onions.

  13. Theresa on 20 Mar 2010 at 8:58 am #

I went to the library and checked out Jamie Oliver’s book Food Revolution and then Robyn and her boyfriend thought the instructions were clear enough to allow them to cook for us last night. We had Classic Tomato Spaghetti from pg. 43 and shrimp scampi by tossing Superstore’s jumbo prawns in butter and garlic. Heaven!
PS. I love regifting. Some of the best things I have came tagged with other people’s names on them! :D

  14. Debra Helmer on 20 Mar 2010 at 9:31 am #

Heard that Ted Ted…was thinking you should of been home in a hot bath…..warm bed….latte with you…

We had pasta with shredded brussel sprouts, pancetta and pine nuts, slivers of garlic and softened shallots. It’s was great – new recipe and definetly a keeper. Dessert was Rancho Gordo’s heirloom red popcorn and a Flames game.

    Get better quickly!

    Deb

  15. Margaret on 20 Mar 2010 at 9:38 am #

Fish and chips…and coleslaw. New ingredient in my coleslaw was snipped fresh dill, which added a new twist to the usual ingredients in this salad. Oh, and we finished off the borscht beet soup from your earlier recipe.

  16. Michelle on 20 Mar 2010 at 10:30 am #

Just started following your blog a few weeks ago, very yummy! I was boiling away a chicken carcass for the better part of the afternoon and made chicken corn chowder. Except I had like 3 mini potatoes for a stock pot full of soup, so I restrained myself from running to the grocery store and chopped up a large sweet potato instead. Not bad!

  17. Abby on 20 Mar 2010 at 10:40 am #

That is such a beautiful latte! Dinner last night was sushi, but I couldn’t eat any of the raw fish since I’m pregnant. It was all cooked rolls for me while I watched my husband enjoy Ahi.

  18. brenda on 20 Mar 2010 at 11:41 am #

The family ate barbequed steak because it was finally warm enough to use the barbeque. I did not eat a proper supper as we had a potluck lunch at work. The nutella latte looks delicious. Hope you can get some rest this weekend and start to feel better.

  19. Michelle on 20 Mar 2010 at 12:37 pm #

I’ve really been enjoying your blog and this latte looks great. So pretty.

Loved your description of your house. Mine looks the same way!

Thanks for the chance to read the book. It’s on my list and I like that it’s a regift. Let’s call it recycling. See how green you are?

  20. Michelle on 20 Mar 2010 at 12:37 pm #

Oops. Dinner… cereal!! True, but sad, I suppose.

  21. Aimee on 20 Mar 2010 at 1:34 pm #

    SHUT UP!

    =)

Get better. My house STINKS, if that’s any consolation, but then again, you know what my week has been like.

    I kinda want this book..

  22. Randi on 20 Mar 2010 at 2:25 pm #

Just got home from vacation and yours was the first page I went to after reading my e-mails.

Dinner last night was quick and easy – miso soup with shitake & soba noodles from Michael Smith new book.

    Would love the Powell Book!

  23. Amy @ Dinner In Real Time on 20 Mar 2010 at 2:35 pm #

Stress definitely can weak havoc on one’s physical state! I hope you are on the mend soon.

We had a simple dinner last night of filets on the grill (having beautiful spring weather) plus oven roasted potatoes and carrots. We had Shiraz too!

  24. Julie on 20 Mar 2010 at 2:52 pm #

Last night I had sushi.. but more exciting will be dinner tomorrow night when I try your slow cooker lamb. :)

  25. Lisa on 20 Mar 2010 at 3:36 pm #

I made a recipe for Rack of Lamb Provencal I found on Epicurious. The lamb was good, but the best part of the recipe was the potatoes – they get crisped a bit on the stoventop first, and then they cook under the lamb along with some shallots, and you end up with these delicious crispy caramelized potatoes with a bit of lamb flavour. Yummy!

  26. Anne on 20 Mar 2010 at 4:04 pm #

Spagetti Pie… haven’t made it for years! Then saw it on your site the other day and have been craving it all ever since

  27. Betsy on 20 Mar 2010 at 4:05 pm #

I was out of town, so I ate at a chain American kinda place – fries, burgers, and such. But my husband used his new grill (Big Green Egg!) to grill some pork chops. I think I really missed out!

  28. Elliott on 20 Mar 2010 at 5:00 pm #

    Dinner last night… I made:

    Fresh pea and mint soup
Black pepper coated filet mignon with a mushroom-red wine jous, Lima beans in milk & butter (very Southern of me), and asparagus wrapped in proscuitto.

Put it all together with a bold Zinfandel.

My friends were very happy, as was I.

  29. Meshelle on 20 Mar 2010 at 5:22 pm #

Hope your feeling better soon, I’ve also been fighting off a cold. Supper last night was miso soup and sushi.

  30. Laurie in Burnaby BC on 20 Mar 2010 at 5:52 pm #

If there is butchery and nasty bits in the book, I don’t want it. Last night I made the last bits of left over corned beef into home made Reuben sandwiches, with a spinach salad. Oh, Heavenly! Sorry to hear that you’re sick. Do hire someone to come in and give you a hand to get on top of the house-work. Even if you work alongside them, it still gives you a boost. Sorry the little beast dumped your soup on your lap. If you let them live, they do tend to out-grow that stage And believe it or not, when it’s gone you miss it.

I had the BEST day today!! I got to watch the semi-final wheelchair curling, and Canada won!!!

I have no voice left. Literally, wore my voice out cheering and singing ‘Oh Canada’ too loud.

Oh, bliss … wonderful memory to have

  31. Vivian on 20 Mar 2010 at 5:57 pm #

Why do the seemingly worst colds always come in spring?! Lots of lemon, honey and, ahem, a tot of rum for your constitution’s sake. Having read the book before the movie “Julie and Julia” and being somewhat disappointed in the softening of the real Julie’s character, I’m wondering if the new book still has some bite? Bet they won’t make a movie of THIS one!

  32. Sarah on 20 Mar 2010 at 6:36 pm #

Slow-cooked ribs slathered in BBQ sauce, three bean salad, Romaine-based garden salad.

And, one Canadian to another, may I suggest Buckley’s cold and sinus tablets? They’re amazing and still allow for mental alertness. It’s kind of shocking how well they work. But then again, it’s Buckley’s.

  33. thepinkpeppercorn on 20 Mar 2010 at 7:00 pm #

Yikes about the nose Julie! But even more so about the soup and shiraz…. oddly enough before you wrote “it’s a good thing he’s cute” – I thought the same thing!! Made this crazy pasta for dinner yesterday with rose water and pistachios, and tonight it’s chicken pot pie. Can’t wait for it to get out of the oven!

  34. eroica on 20 Mar 2010 at 7:07 pm #

Nutella? This week I heard mention of Nutella banana french toast and just this afternoon inspiration struck and my son made himself a sandwich with Nutella and raspberry jam. Not unlike those delicious Godiva raspberry chocolate bars.

  35. Stacey Snacks on 20 Mar 2010 at 7:35 pm #

I also had phlegm and a miserable cough all week, took a blog break for the first time in 2 years.
We had spaghetti w/ jarred clam sauce last night, because I was too sick to cook!

  36. Joanne on 20 Mar 2010 at 7:54 pm #

Julie, don’t put my name in for the book. I think I told you I read the excerpt from it in Chatelaine magazine and although “cleaving” sounds a bit like “cleavage”, I found it more like “butt-crack”!

  37. Shannon on 20 Mar 2010 at 9:15 pm #

Was the nutella latte as good as it sounds?

Dinner last night was Tilapia in a lemon caper sauce over quinoa edamame and baked sweet potato. DIVINE!

  38. Scarehaircare on 20 Mar 2010 at 9:28 pm #

Just spaghetti with a simple bolognese. I usually make spaghetti on Wednesday nights. when it didn’t happen this week, my 17 yr old son took matters into his own hands and had dinner cooking when I came home from school. Gotta love a teenager who is willing to cook.

  39. Melanie on 20 Mar 2010 at 9:43 pm #

We had a pie with a spinach/cottage cheese/potato/carrot filling and phyllo pastry on top, and a green salad on the side. Baklava for dessert, made it for the first time today and it was delicious.

  40. angie on 20 Mar 2010 at 9:55 pm #

Last night I was in Little Rock Arkansas at BBQ contest, there was of course a potluck – I do love a potluck…we had fajitas with chicken, beef & prawns cooked in a giant cast iron wok in a Weber charcoal grill with fresh pressed tortillas & chunky guacamole, fresh crazy good lump meat crab cakes with mustard butter sauce, some weird sausage & “cheese” dip served with “chicken in a biscuit” flavored crackers and homemade banana pudding made by one of the best BBQ cooks I know.
    I should definitely win :)
    Thanks.

  41. Simply Luxurious on 20 Mar 2010 at 10:00 pm #

The latte looks delicious. Would love to know how to make it. Thanks for the bit of info about Julie Powell’s book. I just read her article in Vogue and am curious to read her new book now.

  42. Nicki on 21 Mar 2010 at 1:48 am #

I had a nutella and banana crepe! yummm

  43. maria on 21 Mar 2010 at 8:29 am #

my 2 year old can say Nutella loud and clear! Last last night we had proscuitto and melon, italian sausages, blue cheese stuffed olives and foccaccia, all from Lina’s. But I managed to make some bruschetta to go with.

Hope you get some rest! Sadly my brain does the midnight dance too but I finally pooped out this week.

  44. Lindsay on 21 Mar 2010 at 8:48 am #

Last night I had bbq steak, garlic bread, twice baked potatos and spinach salad. Awesome!

  45. Jessica on 21 Mar 2010 at 9:10 am #

Dinner last night was crockpot chicken tacos after a long day of meetings, school, baseball practice and a baseball game – whew!

  46. Shelley on 21 Mar 2010 at 9:44 am #

Dinner was homemade hummus and grilled flax breakfast pitas.

The hummus was made in the magic bullet which is great for smoothies but fought me a bit on the chickpeas…at least I didn’t burn it out like a braun handmixer thingamajig which apparently didn’t appreciate good thick hummus!

My cold “cure” is a big bowl of wor wonton and as much cranberry juice as I can manage for a few days. Feel better quick!

fish and chips at a family restaurant in Coleman called Popeil’s, i think? the best fish and chips i’ve ever eaten in my life. fresh fish in a beery batter with some herbs included in the batter.

okay. oatmeal for the next week to reduce my cholesterol.

  48. Barb on 21 Mar 2010 at 12:02 pm #

I haven’t had a cold in ages and I hope I don’t catch one soon. My friend swears by cloth hankies for softness.

Friday was pizza. Really good pizza.

  49. marcia on 21 Mar 2010 at 8:16 pm #

I’ve been wanting this book for a while now! Dinner last night was Salmon on the bbq

  50. kickpleat on 21 Mar 2010 at 9:18 pm #

Glad to know I’m not the only one dropping the ball out there! Dinner was oven baked risotto with broccoli, mushrooms & leftover chicken. It was delicious but we really needed a green salad to eat with it. Oh well.

  51. Lesli Christianson-Kellow on 22 Mar 2010 at 12:49 am #

Supper last night was at work, so it was leftover a bbq pork loin chop with rice. (It was 3 or 4 days old, and I wasn’t going to let it go to waste!!) :)

  52. Laura on 22 Mar 2010 at 2:21 am #

I had leftover brined roast chicken that I tossed with steamed broccoli, cold cucumber chunks, cilantro and satay peanut sauce!

  53. Hilary on 22 Mar 2010 at 5:14 am #

This doesn’t happen very often but bast night we couldn’t be bothered to cook so we had cornflakes. Then we were still hungry so at 10pm we each had a piece of toast. That is definitely the saddest dinner amongst these comments.

  54. Lana in South Mountain (ON) on 22 Mar 2010 at 7:27 am #

We had company and splurged on rib steaks, done on the bbq, with sauteed mushrooms, yellow and red peppers. Bernaise sauce, potatoes and fresh baguette on the side.
I, too, have a head cold, or maybe spring allergies, so feel all stuffed up. BUT made to the official first day of spring without a cold or flu. Hurray!

  55. Liese on 22 Mar 2010 at 9:06 am #

I made Balsamic Chicken, potatoes, and garlic butter rolls! Yummmmmmmmmm!

  56. Ashley on 22 Mar 2010 at 9:28 am #

Oh how I’ve been dying for a copy of this book…

I’m a vegan, and a Calgarian, and an avid reader of your blog! Your recipes are very easy to convert to be vegan ones (sans meat centered dishes) which is why I love to drop in frequently :)

We had a delicious vegan lasagna from The Daily Green: http://www.thedailygreen.com/healthy-eating/recipes/vegan-tofu-spinach-lasagna

Had never thought to use extra firm tofu in the blender with nut milk and turn it into a DELICIOUS ricotta! I made extra of this “ricotta” and hope to drop it on top of a cushy pizza crust with caramelized onions, home made slow roasted tomato sauce and some roughly cracked pepper tonight.

  57. Cheryl Arkison on 22 Mar 2010 at 12:32 pm #

Friday, Friday? What did I have for dinner on Friday?
That’s right, dinner out with a girlfriend in Edmonton. We went to Characters where, instead of bread, they served fresh fries and potatoe chips with a black bean aoili. Needless to say, we skipped dessert.

  58. Jill on 22 Mar 2010 at 12:34 pm #

We had just arrived home from a little vacation and after restocking the fridge decided we only had enough energy to throw a dr. Oetkers pizza in the oven. That with a little bean salad on the side was last nights quick and easy dinner.

  59. Tatiana Tomljanovic on 22 Mar 2010 at 2:52 pm #

I’m in love with Nutella and with lattes so this seems like the most natural evolution of flavours.

Dinner last night was more like linner due to family scheduling, but it was fantastic nonetheless. We had shredded pork and carrot lettuce wraps, Thai lemon chicken, bell peppers and beef stir fry on top of coconut rice paired with a fantastic Italian Nipozzano. The grand finale was a no-bake strawberry cheesecake. I know what you’re going to say, that is the most spastic linner you’ve ever heard of. But it was my birthday so I refused to pay any attention to geographic regions or proper pairings and treated myself to everything I like.

  60. glenda on 22 Mar 2010 at 3:06 pm #

dinner last night….slow cooked barbeque ribs, rice, corn, and foccaccia bred….for 50.

  61. julie on 22 Mar 2010 at 4:19 pm #

Nutella Latte?!?! How awesome is that? How did you make that exactly? I would love the recipe! And last nights dinner was blue cheese burgers, homemade french fries and deviled eggs. And it was exceptionally yummy! Sign me up for a chance to win that book! :)

  62. Morgan on 22 Mar 2010 at 6:19 pm #

Can I just say how much I love your blog? Had the Nutella Latte today with a girlfriend and I think I’m addicted! What a brilliant creation!

Last night’s dinner? Burgers, potato salad, coleslaw – all lovingly cooked up by the in-laws :p

I would love to read that book1

  63. Veronica F. on 22 Mar 2010 at 8:03 pm #

Ah, nutella latte…being italian, I can honestly admit I grew up eating nutella sandwiches, always on soft italian loaf and yes, sometimes (but not always) with the Marshmallow spread you can still find in obscure shops here and there. :) Hey, don’t judge it, try it! REALLY great!! It took me a moment to realize just how easy it would be to make my own nutella latte, not using nutella, but by using hazelnuy syrup to lightly coat my large mug and after adding 2 beautiful shots of dark espresso, I’d throw in some beautifully 180 degree steamed chocolate milk. YUM!!
Ok, the book sounds awesome…so dinner last night…a simple 20 minute fix of cuban tomatoe soup I made using crushed tomatoes, cuban spices and spicy texas shredded cheese :) and thick grilled old cheddar cheese sandwiches, made on my Forman grill. A perfect Sunday night din-din. :)
Thanks for always inspiring me and making me giggle at the same time, Frick! :) Kudos to you!

  64. Krista on 22 Mar 2010 at 9:56 pm #

Nutella Latte – heaven in a cup! I will have to try one the next time I’m in Calgary.
I often read your blog and look forward to both the recipes and your humour.
I’ve been eyeing Julie Powell’s latest – looks quite interesting. Dinner last night was comfort food – porcupines, rice, and broccoli!
