Orange Waffles with Cranberry Maple Syrup

Cranberry%2Bsyrup Orange Waffles with Cranberry Maple Syrup

Again, my mealtime theme: thriftiness. Isn’t it next to cleanliness? Probably not.

I think this time was worse than the dinner orchestrated around a bunch of depressed cilantro – this time there was a few spoonfuls of cranberry sauce left over from Christmas – not enough to do much with except spread on a sandwich, but there were no turkey leftovers. The culinarily sane might think to scrape it out into the garbage and put the bowl in the dishwasher, but I kept mine covered in the fridge for days in the hopes that I might use it in something.

And yes-I did. Turns out tart cranberries go very well in maple syrup. I always mean to warm it anyway, on account of real maple syrup needing to be stored in the fridge. I put my few precious spoonfuls into a small pot with some syrup and warmed it as I made waffles. And, thinking of how much Mike loves cranberry-orange loaf (doesn’t everyone?) added a bit of grated orange zest to the waffle batter. Doesn’t it almost seem like I planned it that way from the beginning?

It appears I’ve posted recipes for waffles before. You could make Waffles of Insane Greatness, or honey bran waffles, or overnight yeasted waffles. Or you could just add orange zest to your egg-milk mixture and make French toast. (To combine the two, cook your dipped bread in your waffle iron!)

What a brilliant use of leftovers! This is taking thriftiness to new and delicious heights. I am forever trying to waste less, and posts such as this are great inspiration for looking at the little bits leftover in a new way.

Your pics always look amazing, you are a talented girl!

Nowadays, having 3 teenagers, I don’t have time to take pics of anything I’m serving, they want it before it’s done!!! However they disappear before the dishes get washed!

Happy New Year, Health, Love and Happiness to you and your family :)

Your blog is so inspiational. I check it daily. I too save to many “bits” for something later. My best use of leftover cranberry sauce turned out to be as a sauce for chicken breast – sauted with various vegs and the CB sauce added 5 mins at the end. Delish.
must try blueberries with it now. Orange and cranberry is such a classic pairing too.

My mom’s story of a babysitter comming early for a supper of waffles during the war with butter rationing in place, always cracks me up. She had never had waffles before and very carefully filled every divot with butter, thus using up the weekly ration for a family of four in one fell swoop!!!!!!! Funny now, but a catastrophe then!

And guess who tossed the rest of the cranberry sauce yesterday??????

Have a great 2011, Julie! Thanks for the continued great recipes. Our Christmas Day was enhanced by your yeasted waffles, brussels sprouts slaw (we served it warm), slow cooker dressing, cranberry sauce and hazelnut espresso shortbread. Christmas Eve (mom’s birthday) guests were served the amazing braised beef with onions and the wild rice/pecan salad.

Off to make the mandarin jam, some eggnog scones and Cheryl’s peroghy dough.

    Happy New Year Julie !
Christmas Eve (Dad’s 90th Birthday) supper featured Eric’s Slow Cooker Pulled Beef with the family favorite Chocolate Cake. (and some salads)
The dumplings are simmering in the turkey soup as I type.
Disaster struck… As I was draining the last of the turkey broth, the heavy pot slipped and broke a favorite bowl. The broth was already moved, but the bowl was special. (50 yr old) Does Duraware still make big mixing bowls. I think it came from an era before Melmac and Tupperware. It was hard durable plastic with a rim and was just the right size….
    Any sources? Any leads appreciated.

Good timing I’ve been meaning to make waffles for awhile I’ll have to give these orange ones a try. Gingerbread waffles are also on my list – I need to make a bunch and freeze them so the kids have a good breakfast on busy mornings. Sooo much better than Eggos :)

As for cranberry sauce- I’ve been eating mine on Oatmeal.

Yum–these look great! Funny, orange french toast has long been a favorite of mine, but I’ve never thought to make orange waffles. Thanks for the delicious inspiration.
