Chocolate Covered Corn Flakes
Eons ago I read in Gourmet magazine about a swanky chocolatier in New York City who made, among other things (like tall, smooth-sided peanut butter cups the size and shape of a shot glass), chocolate covered Corn Flakes. The image of them stuck. And so one night when we were up late playing Blokus and needing something nibbly/crunchy/chocolatey to set out on the table, I melted a (big) handful of chopped chocolate, poured it over a bowl of Corn Flakes and tossed it like a salad. Then spread the mixture out on a parchment-lined sheet and let it cool.
You can try to shape it into clumps, or let it lie as it will and serve it like a bowl of crisp, flaky caramel corn, without the caramel. Turns out, there’s no need to turn on the oven to feed a chocolate craving.

I just got back from my first (but hopefully not last) visit to PEI, and our snack of choice there came from the Anne of Green Gables Chocolate Shop: “PEI Chips” — Old Dutch rippled potato chips coated in chocolate – weirdly delicious.

I used to make these when I was a kid! I had a cookbook with a recipe for little Easter nests made out of chocolate covered cornflakes.

COME ON. This sounds awesome. I’d be tempted to sprinkle a bit of coarse salt once it had been all spread out on the sheet…but I don’t know if it would have the effect I think it would.
I’ve gotta try that Nutella granola too. I was just reading an article about how Nutella isn’t a terrible breakfast like many seem to think it is, if you eat it the right way. And what’s more right than Nutella granola? I ask you.

I keep telling my husband he can’t have chocolate Cheerios – maybe something like this will satisfy his food cravings.

Yes! Will make some for the visiting great nieces. Thanks, Julie!
Quick question, I am looking for your ham stuffed turkey (I think that’s what it was), where would I find it? You made it for a breakfast show a year or two ago. Please help.

Jacques Torres is the chocolatier who started this decadence at his NYC outlets. He also does cheerios in milk chocolate. Check out his website – the chocolate covered popcorn he makes is the best, ever.

I bought some delicious Milka chocolate covered cornflake and Daim (English toffee) clusters in Germany. Sadly, they did not make it back to the US. They were SO good, but would also be so easy to make.

That looks great, Julie. Did you see the Tacofino truck was featured in a show called Street Eats? I saw it on the Food Channel last night.

You do realise that Corn Flakes, like Graham cookies were invented to be bland in order to prevent, how shall I put it, too strong emotions to swell up in (particularly young) people… and thus prevent what, in the nineteenth century was called «self-pollution». Now, by dipping Corn Flakes in chocolate, a presumed aphrodisiac… there’s a kind of interesting twist going on here. Sorry. The historian could not help have his brain titillated.

If you’re too lazy to make this, and you like milk chocolate, Ritter Sport (German chocolate bar maker) has a corn flakes chocolate bar. Ritter Sport bars a bit hard to find, but European grocery stores often carry them, and Mountain Equipment Coop apparently does as well. http://www.mec.ca/AST/ShopMEC/HikingCamping/Food/PRD~5020-766/ritter-sport-cornflakes-chocolate-bar.jsp

Sounds perfect. My recent late night chocolate snack was a marshmallow spread with Nutella. It is also delicious. But I guess this snack is one to share! Thanks for sharing.
